St Benedict's Chapel
St Mary's House, Brighton
In 2010 the Grace and Compassion Benedictine Sisters commissioned this comprehensive collection of works for their new chapel building in Brighton.

In St Benedict’s chapel my designs aspired to permit this spiritual art to flow around the walls of the Chapel - like a circle of light:

- Starting at the west entrance with six stained glass windows;
- to the North and South with fourteen Stations of the Cross;
- and with a rich reredos screen mounted at the rear of the dais;
- and finally to complete the circle at the altar.

One might further suggest that the altar would be both the beginning and the end to the circle.

The six west windows depict themes from the work of the Grace and Compassion Benedictine Sisters, a labour of love around the World. The designs represent the cornerstone of the Convent's history since its beginnings by its founder Mother Mary Garson OSB MBE.

The fourteen Stations of the Cross, again in glass, convey Jesus's path to the Cross. Each station interprets the theme from its own perspective such that the scale of the scene is altered throughout the stations. Each stage of ‘The Way’ presents a new angle to focus on.

The glass reredos depicts a backdrop of linen cloth, representing Jesus, the thread running through us all. The Cross is raised up upon the cloth and the colour blue speaks of The Virgin Mary and heavenly love.

The reredos design grows from the altar. The altar is visually the final destination, the base of which exudes the same blue linen design.

Blue is the unifying colour throughout much of the art in the Chapel; and is set off by the subtle and peaceful geometry of the architecture.

This is both one body of work as well as many individual compositions.
